Scientific evidence and clinical experience demonstrate that cats learn constantly and that, with teh right tools, they can be trained effectively and respectfully. In this context, the Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) developed a set of guidelines to implement positive reinforcement training as a pillar of feline welfare.
Learning all the time, even at rest
One of the central points of the document is to recognise that cats are always learning. Even when they appear inactive, they process stimuli and generate associations. This learning can occur through classical conditioning – such as anticipating an unpleasant experience when seeing a stimulus – or through operant conditioning, where the animal associates a voluntary behavior with a result.
The FelineVMA is clear: positive reinforcement is the technique of choice. It consists of adding something pleasant promptly after a desired behavior to increase the likelihood that it will be repeated. Edible treats, petting, or play can fulfill that role, as long as they are meaningful to that individual.
Emotions play a key role.Positive states such as curiosity or desire facilitate learning, while fear, anxiety, or pain activate defensive responses that block the ability to acquire complex behaviors.
Health and behavior: an inseparable link
The toolkit emphasizes that effective learning cannot occur without health. Chronic pain, inflammation, or systemic diseases depress the nervous system and reduce the cat’s tolerance to interact or cooperate. Therefore, if learning difficulties or sudden behavior changes occur, a medical evaluation is an indispensable step before starting any training plan.
