Overview of the Situation
Torrential rain has caused widespread flooding in Spain’s north-eastern Catalonia region, trapping individuals in vehicles. The severe weather, driven by Storm Alice in the western Mediterranean, has particularly impacted the province of Tarragona.
Impacted Areas and Alerts
Videos circulating on social media show significant flooding in the towns of la Ràpita and Santa Bàrbara, both located within the Tarragona province. The force of the water is evident, with debris and objects being swept along by the currents. Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, has declared a red alert – the highest level – for the coastal province, indicating extreme risk.
The Civil Protection agency of Catalonia has advised residents in the Ebro Delta region of Tarragona to remain indoors. AEMET forecasts up to 180mm (7 inches) of rainfall within a 12-hour period in this area, exacerbating the already challenging conditions.
Travel Disruptions
Train services have been suspended along the Mediterranean Corridor, affecting departures from Barcelona and Valencia,in the neighboring Valencia region. The suspension will remain in effect until further notice, impacting travel plans for many commuters and travelers. Several other regions in south-eastern Spain, including the Balearic Islands, have also experienced heavy rains and flooding in recent days.
Current Status and Safety Measures
As of this report, there have been no confirmed reports of deaths or injuries related to the flooding. However, officials emphasize the seriousness of the situation and the potential for further complications as more rain is anticipated. Cristina Vicente, a senior official at Catalonia’s Civil Protection agency, stated, “The situation is complex, and more rain is forecast,” according to La Vanguardia newspaper.
