Catanzaro, Italy – A 46-year-old healthcare assistant jumped from the third-floor balcony of her residence on Via Zanotti Bianco in Catanzaro on the night of April 21, 2026, taking her three children with her. The woman and two of her children died instantly, while the eldest daughter, a six-year-old girl, survived in critical condition and was later transferred to Gaslini Hospital in Genoa for specialized care.
The incident occurred in a residential area not far from the city center, where the family lived at number 13 Via Zanotti Bianco. According to reports, the woman jumped from the balcony holding her three children. The two younger children, aged four years and four months, died instantly upon impact. The six-year-old daughter suffered severe injuries, including a thoracic aortic injury and significant damage to her liver and spleen, and was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Pugliese Hospital at Dulbecco University Hospital in Catanzaro.
After undergoing a delicate interventional radiology procedure and initial stabilization, the surviving child was transferred to the Gaslini Hospital in Genoa the evening of April 22, 2026, for continued critical care. She remains the sole survivor of the tragedy.
The event has caused shock and deep sadness in the local community. Friends and neighbors described the three children as “three little jewels.” Many residents were seen in front of the building where a wreath of flowers had been placed, unwilling to speak about the incident. The woman worked as a healthcare assistant, and her actions have prompted discussions about maternal mental health, particularly postpartum depression, which experts noted is treatable but requires support and should not be faced alone.
Authorities, including the Catanzaro Mobile Squad and forensic police, are investigating the incident. The hypothesis considered most probable is murder-suicide. Investigators conducted an inspection inside the family’s flat, and the matter is being kept confidential. The public prosecutor Graziella is coordinating the investigation.
As of April 23, 2026, the surviving daughter remains in intensive care at Gaslini Hospital. No further details about her condition have been made publicly available. The funeral arrangements for the deceased have not been disclosed, and the father of the children, who was not present at the time of the incident, has not issued any public statement.
