Catedral de La Plata Unveils New Lighting and Restores Bell Sounds

Catedral de La Plata Unveils New Lighting and Restores Bell Sounds

November 16, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

The Cathedral of La Plata will unveil a new lighting system and restore the sound of its bells on Friday as part of the project “Lumina: light, heritage, and identity.” This initiative aims to highlight the architectural beauty of La Plata’s historic buildings. The event will start at 7 PM and is free and outdoors.

This opening event also marks the beginning of the celebrations for the city’s anniversary. It celebrates 25 years since the main towers were inaugurated. The Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción will debut a new energy-efficient exterior lighting system alongside a computer system that will restore its symphonic bell tower.

The new system is a collaboration between EDELAP, the Municipality, the Province, the Catedral Foundation, and the Archbishopric of La Plata. The opening will feature a performance by well-known musician and conductor Nicolás Sorín.

LED, Bells, and New Sound

The Cathedral will be equipped with 280 to 300 LED lights. A new software system will be used to control the bells, replacing a previous system damaged by lightning in 2016. The building now has a lightning protection system.

The Cathedral will have 25 bells, varying in size from 60 centimeters to 2 meters. These bells will ring on special occasions. Additionally, 40 different songs of various musical styles have been programmed into the system.

The bells can be operated from the “brain” located at the top of the Cathedral, from lower areas, and also remotely. This allows sounds to be played from Plaza Moreno or inside the Municipal Palace.

Renovations at the Cathedral of La Plata

Julio Alak, a local leader, recently called the Cathedral the city’s most iconic monument. He stated, “In light of the darkness and silence it currently faces, we will restore its light and bring its bells back to life.” He emphasized its significance as a landmark for both the city and the province of Buenos Aires.

The initiative revitalizes the Cathedral, helping it regain its status as an emblematic structure in the area, cherished by both locals and visitors.
