The 50th anniversary edition of the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens has commenced at Kai Tak Stadium, marking a historic milestone for a tournament that first debuted in 1976. This year’s event serves as the opening round of the three-round HSBC SVNS World Championships, featuring both men’s and women’s tournaments alongside the Hong Kong-exclusive Melrose Claymores competition.

As the first event of the HSBC SVNS series, the tournament brings international rugby to Hong Kong with a fast-paced format. Rugby Sevens consists of seven players per side, with matches lasting 14 minutes, except for the final, which is extended to 20 minutes. The game is characterized by precise kicking and fast runs, differing from the slower pace and frequent scrums of traditional 15-player Rugby Union.

Hong Kong China Rugby Defends Titles

A central focus of the 2026 tournament is the Melrose Claymores competition. The Hong Kong China Rugby (HKCR) men’s and women’s squads entered the event as defending champions, seeking to maintain their titles in what has been described as the Kai Tak cauldron.

Hong Kong China Rugby Defends Titles

On April 12, 2026, Hong Kong China Rugby officially announced the sevens squads for the tournament following a reveal at Sha Tin. According to reporting from The Standard (HK), the national call-ups included several young guns brought in to meet the challenge of the international competition. The South China Morning Post reported that the tournament features the debut of a 15s stalwart who joined the sevens squad after overcoming personal self-doubt.

Fan Experience and the HK7s Fan Village

The event has expanded its footprint beyond the pitch to include a massive entertainment offering. On April 14, 2026, the HK7s Fan Village officially opened to all ticketholders. The village covers 10,700 square meters and is located just steps from the stadium, featuring live music, family activities, and appearances by rugby legends.

The 50th anniversary celebration has also seen a strong emphasis on the tournament’s unique cultural traditions, particularly the use of fancy dress. Guides released on March 30, 2026, encouraged attendees to prepare costumes, ranging from inflatable outfits to coordinated group themes, to maintain the festive atmosphere that has defined the event for five decades.

Ticket demand for the anniversary year has been significant, with sales rivalling the tournament’s debut at Kai Tak. Hong Kong China Rugby announced that the 100,000th ticket had been sold, following the start of ticket sales on October 1.

Partnerships and Official Ambassadors

The 2026 tournament is supported by several high-profile commercial partnerships. On April 2, 2026, Marriott Bonvoy announced a renewed partnership with Hong Kong China Rugby to serve as an official partner of the event. In further additions to the tournament’s hospitality, Shake Shack was announced on April 13, 2026, as the Official Food Partner for the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.

To honor the 50-year history of the event, the tournament has brought back several iconic figures of the sport. Official Ambassadors Waisale Serevi, DJ Forbes, and Tyla King returned for the anniversary edition to visit the event and engage with fans.

The tournament follows a week-long rugby festival that began on April 12, 2026, incorporating various new events into the traditional Rugby Week leading up to the main competition at Kai Tak Stadium.
