Structural Improvements Funded for Catholic Charities Shelter
Prairie Meadows Racetrack and casino has awarded Catholic Charities a $20,000 Community Betterment Grant to support structural renovations at the Catholic Charities Emergency Family shelter in Des Moines, Iowa. The funding,announced this year,directly addressed necessary repairs to the shelter’s basement,including the installation of new floor tiling to improve drainage and wall bracing to enhance structural stability.

Rising Homelessness in Iowa
The grant comes at a time of increasing homelessness across Iowa. According to data collected by the Iowa Institute for Community Alliances, more than 3,000 individuals were identified as experiencing homelessness on a single night this year. Approximately a quarter of those individuals were located in Polk County, where Des Moines is situated.
