Attack Details and Police Response

The attack unfolded around 10 p.m. on a Saturday night when a white van drove into a crowd roughly 100 meters away from a Christopher Street Day event, according to police spokesperson Florian Nath. The vehicle traveled through a park parallel to a main road, struck multiple individuals, and crashed into a tree. The driver then abandoned the vehicle and fled.

According to Interior Minister Dobrindt, the primary suspect also attacked people with a blade-like weapon resembling a machete before escaping. Emergency responders and police cleared the area and evacuated festivalgoers while searching the Tiergarten area overnight using infrared cameras. Police later confirmed that the vehicle was privately owned rather than rented.

Suspect Identification and Manhunt Outcome

Authorities identified the chief suspect as 21-year-old Abdul B., a German citizen born in Germany with Lebanese maternal origins, as reported by Deutsche Welle. Prosecutors stated that Abdul B. had a history of prior attacks and radicalization, having previously shared Islamic State propaganda online and attempted to join the group in Syria before later distancing himself.

The manhunt concluded on Sunday evening when Berlin’s Senate Department for Interior Affairs announced that the fugitive suspect was shot and killed during a police operation in a garden allotment located in Spandau, Berlin’s westernmost borough. Interior Minister Dobrindt subsequently confirmed that the public was no longer in danger.

Investigation and Public Reaction

Because of the suspect’s background and the nature of the assault, the Federal Public Prosecutor General took over the investigation, a step confirmed by Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig. The office handles serious crimes affecting internal and external security, including terrorism and treason. Chancellor Friedrich Merz called the incident a heinous attack on German society in a social media statement. Hundreds of mourners gathered at the Brandenburg Gate on Sunday to grieve the victims, denounce the violence, and honor the LGBTQ+ community. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier described the event as an assault on the country’s open society, way of life, and ability to coexist.
