The American comedian Jimmy Kimmel used his Christmas speech on British Channel 4 on Christmas Day to criticize President Donald Trump.
The annual tradition, which began in 1993, involves a celebrity giving a Christmas speech in the style of the monarch – often with a controversial touch.
Kimmel started by saying that he doesn’t know much about what’s going on in Britain.
– But I know what is happening here at home, and I can tell you that from a fascism perspective this has been a very good year. Tyranny flourishes here, he said.
This is written by several news media, among others The Hill, Axios and BBC.
Was taken off the air
The comedian pointed out that he was threatened by the US government earlier this year after he did not “worship the president the way Trump wanted”.
– The American government threatened me and the company I work for, and suddenly we were off the air. But then you know what happened? A Christmas miracle happened, he said.
ABC took Kimmel off the air in September after comments he made about the murder of conservative right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.
The statements caused strong reactions among several Republicans and conservatives in the United States, and Brendan Carr, head of the US Broadcasting Commission (FCC), came out and said that the TV station should intervene.
REMOVED: The talk show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” is taken off the air indefinitely after this monologue, in which Kimmel suggests that Charlie Kirk’s alleged killer, Tyler Robinson, may have been a pro-Trump Republican.
After about a week, Kimmel was back on the air.
– We won, the president lost, and now I’m back on the air every night giving the most powerful politician on earth what he deserves, Kimmel said in Thursday’s broadcast.
Sorry to the Brits
The comedian went on to criticize Trump for acting “like a king,” saying that more Americans are embarrassed by the president’s behavior.
– Some of us have a problem with the guy who thinks he’s our king. Here in the United States, right now, we are both figuratively and literally tearing down the structures of our democracy, from the free press to science to medicine to the independence of the judiciary to the White House itself.
Kimmel concluded by apologizing to the British people.
– We are in a real mess. And we know that this also affects you. And I just wanted to say: I’m sorry. And we want you to know, or at least I want you to know, that we are not all like him, he concluded.
