Jazz vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa has signed with Blue Note Records and is preparing to record her label debut, following critical acclaim for her self-titled 2020 album and a featured appearance on saxophonist Joshua Redman’s recent projects.

Cavassa, born July 5, 1994, in Escondido, California, first gained attention as a contestant on the eleventh season of American Idol in 2012, performing in the Hollywood rounds before being eliminated. She later relocated to New Orleans in 2017, immersing herself in the city’s vibrant music scene.

According to her official biography, Cavassa credits the Bay Area music scene as providing her “real education” after earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music from San Francisco State University. In New Orleans, she toured with Adonis Rose and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, as well as trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, and collaborated with drummer/singer Jamison Ross, who co-produced her debut album.

In 2021, Cavassa won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition at the James Moody Jazz Festival, a prestigious honor that further elevated her profile.

Cavassa’s musical influences include Billie Holiday, Phyllis Hyman, Ornella Vanoni, and Jeff Buckley. She cites these artists as foundational to her unique vocal approach.

Her visibility increased significantly with her appearance on Joshua Redman’s 2023 album, Where Are We, which marked Redman’s first studio album to feature vocals. She reprised her collaboration with Redman on his 2025 album, Words Fall Short, contributing to the track “Era’s End.”

DownBeat magazine described Cavassa as “a star in the making” following the release of Where Are We, while Stereophile praised her voice as “idiosyncratic, but…trustworthy in its clarity and almost physical in its intimacy.”

Cavassa independently released her self-titled debut album on August 21, 2020. The album garnered critical attention and laid the groundwork for her subsequent success. She has performed across the country and internationally with a diverse range of artists, including Cyrille Aimee, Quiana Lynell, Kermit Ruffins, and Shannon Powell.

The signing with Blue Note Records, announced in August 2024, represents a significant step in Cavassa’s career, positioning her alongside some of the most respected names in jazz. She has already begun recording material for her debut album with the label.

Cavassa’s artistry has been described as a blend of lyrical intention and rhythmic curiosity, earning her recognition from publications like JazzIz and OffBeat Magazine. She continues to perform regularly at venues in New Orleans, including a weekly session at The Starlight in the French Quarter.
