Ravi Agrawal Reappointed CBDT Chairman for Another Term
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the re-appointment of Ravi Agrawal as chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the primary policy-making body for the Income Tax Department. This extension ensures continuity in the role at the head of the organization.
Agrawal, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer from the 1988 batch, initially assumed the role of CBDT chairman in June 2024 for a one-year period. He was scheduled to retire June 30, but will now continue to shape income tax policy.
The official order stated that Agrawal’s re-appointment is on a contract basis, lasting one year from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, or until further notice. The terms and conditions align with those applicable to re-employed central goverment officers.
Before becoming chairman, Agrawal served as Member (Administration) within the CBDT. He took over from Nitin Gupta, another IRS officer (1986 batch), whose extended tenure concluded June 30, 2024. Gupta had been in charge since June 2022 and received a nine-month extension past his original retirement date in September 2023.
What’s next
Agrawal is expected to continue guiding the CBDT in it’s policy formulations and administrative functions related to direct taxes for the coming year.
