Midwest Storm and Coffee Costs: A Tale of Two Economic Headwinds
The Midwest Snowstorm: Travel Disrupted, Safety Concerns
A powerful winter storm swept across the Midwest this week, bringing heavy snowfall, blizzard conditions, and treacherous travel. Multiple states, including Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa, experienced significant disruptions. The storm triggered hundreds of vehicle crashes, leading to numerous injuries and, tragically, at least three fatalities according to reports from the NBC News.Interstate highways were temporarily closed, and state police urged residents to stay off the roads.
Air travel was also severely impacted.FlightAware data showed over 1,500 flights canceled and thousands more delayed at major hubs like Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW). The Federal aviation Management (FAA) issued ground stops at several airports, exacerbating the chaos. The storm’s timing, coinciding with peak travel days, amplified the difficulties for passengers.
Coffee Costs Remain Elevated Despite Tariff Relief
While the Midwest battled winter weather, a different kind of economic challenge continued to brew for small businesses: persistently high coffee prices.despite the recent lifting of some tariffs on imported coffee, many cafés are still struggling to absorb the increased costs and maintain affordable prices for consumers. The tariffs, initially imposed in 2018, added significant expense to green coffee beans, a primary ingredient for most coffee shops.
The USDA Economic Research Service reports that while the removal of certain tariffs has provided some relief, other factors – including global supply chain issues, unfavorable weather conditions in key coffee-growing regions like Brazil and Vietnam, and increased shipping costs – continue to exert upward pressure on prices. Specialty coffee beans,in particular, have seen substantial price increases.
| Coffee Type | Price per pound (February 2023) | Price per Pound (february 2024) | % Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arabica (Standard) | $1.50 | $1.85 | +23.3% |
| Robusta (Standard) | $1.20 | $1.40 | +16.7% |
| specialty Arabica | $6.00 | $8.50 | +41.7% |
Many café owners are facing difficult choices: raise prices, reduce portion sizes,or absorb the costs and accept lower profit margins. A survey conducted by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) found that 65% of café owners reported experiencing a decrease in profitability due to rising coffee costs. Some are exploring alternative sourcing options or focusing on higher-margin products like pastries and specialty drinks.
