The CBS Evening News
returned to an audience of more than 4 million total viewers for the first time in several weeks during the five-day period ending May 22, 2026.
According to Nielsen data, the broadcast averaged 4.035 million viewers for the week of May 18, 2026, representing a 6% increase in total viewership compared to the previous week, when the program captured approximately 3.8 million viewers.
The program also saw growth in the 25-54 age demographic, a group highly prioritized by advertisers. For the period ending May 22, the newscast drew between 605,000 and 608,000 viewers in this demographic, up from 482,000 viewers the week prior.
Competitive Landscape
Despite the recent gains, the CBS Evening News
continues to trail its primary competitors in both total audience and demographic reach.

ABC’s World News Tonight
maintained its position as the sector leader, recording nearly 8.2 million total viewers and 966,000 viewers in the 25-54 demographic.
NBC Nightly News
followed with nearly 6.1 million total viewers and 867,000 viewers in the advertiser-favorite demographic.
The ratings for the week were based on four days of broadcasts for ABC and NBC, as both networks retitled
one of the five days of broadcasts during that period.
Anchor Transition and Performance
The viewership increase comes as anchor Tony Dokoupil continues to lead the signature CBS newscast. Dokoupil assumed the role in early January 2026 and has been under intense scrutiny
since taking the position.
The recent Nielsen figures suggest the program is beginning to regain some ground after several weeks of lower audience levels.
