CDC Launches Centralized Overdose Prevention Data Channel

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched the CDC Overdose Prevention Data Channel, according to official agency releases. The newly established resource centralizes fatal and nonfatal overdose data, prevention strategies, and information about CDC programs into a single platform timed with International Overdose Awareness Day.

The launch coincides with preliminary estimates from the National Vital Statistics System predicting 67,798 drug overdose deaths in the United States during the 12 months ending in March 2026. According to CDC data, this figure represents a 12.3% decrease in overdose deaths compared to the same period in the previous year. While the numbers show a continued national decline, public health officials emphasize that fatal overdoses remain far too high.

Data Sources and Platform Features

The centralized channel draws information from three primary CDC surveillance systems: the State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System, the Drug Overdose Surveillance and Epidemiology system, and the National Vital Statistics System. According to Christine Mattson, deputy associate director of science in CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Division of Overdose Prevention, the platform merges these information sources to supply users with details that are faster to access, more thorough, and ready for practical use.

Users visiting the platform can explore national and state-level trends through interactive graphics. The website allows public health professionals and members of the public to adjust visual displays for different states and download files in PNG or CSV formats. For instance, the platform features a graphic utilizing preliminary 2025 data showing that 66 out of 100 overdose deaths are preventable, based on agency figures.

The site does not introduce entirely new datasets, nor does it replace existing agency webpages, according to CDC statements. Instead, it aggregates existing resources with user-friendly visualizations to streamline research. As Mattson explained to reporters, the goal is to help professionals spend less time finding and assembling information and more time applying it to prevention efforts.
