Atlanta, GA – A shooting at the Centers for Disease Control adn Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta on Friday, August 8, 2025, left one CDC security officer dead and sparked a wave of fear and outrage, prompting a security review and raising serious questions about the escalating rhetoric targeting public health officials. The incident underscores a growing trend of hostility towards the CDC and its employees, fueled by misinformation and political attacks.
Shooting and Victim Details
The shooting occured at the CDC’s Roybal Campus, resulting in the death of security officer rose, a 33-year-old former Marine and recent police academy graduate. DeKalb County officials confirmed Rose was expecting a child, leaving behind a wife and three children. The shooter, identified as White, a local resident, was motivated by a deep distrust of COVID-19 vaccines, according to neighbors.
Neighbors described white as seemingly affable but consistently vocal about his anti-vaccine beliefs, believing vaccines had personally harmed him and others. “He was very unsettled, and he very deeply believed that vaccines hurt him and were hurting other people,” said Nancy Hoalst, a neighbour.”He emphatically believed that.” despite his strong convictions, Hoalst expressed shock at his violent actions, stating she never anticipated he would target the CDC.
Political Context and CDC Layoffs
The shooting is being viewed by many as a direct outcome of the increasingly antagonistic environment fostered by political figures and the spread of misinformation. The CDC has been under intense scrutiny and faced meaningful upheaval under the leadership of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., appointed Secretary by President Donald Trump.
As Kennedy’s appointment, the CDC has experienced nearly 2,000 layoffs, and President Trump has proposed cutting the agency’s budget by half, with plans to shift some functions to a new “Governance for a Healthy America.” Kennedy, a long-time proponent of anti-vaccine views, gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic by actively spreading distrust in the vaccines, even labeling vaccination of children as “criminal medical malpractice.”
A group of laid-off employees, calling themselves “fired But Fighting,” has been actively opposing these changes, and has called for the resignation of Russell vought, the Office of Management and Budget director, citing a previously recorded video where Vought expressed a desire to “traumatically affect” federal bureaucrats and make them fear coming to work. “We want the bureaucrats to be traumatically affected,” Vought said in the video.
CDC response and Security concerns
Following the shooting, CDC leadership held an emergency conference call with staff on Saturday, August 9, 2025, to discuss a full security assessment. Employees expressed feeling vulnerable, with one stating they felt like “sitting ducks.” Concerns were raised about the role of misinformation in inciting the attack, and whether administrators had addressed the issue with Secretary Kennedy.
In a subsequent email, the CDC’s security office instructed employees to remove old parking decals from their vehicles, acknowledging they were no longer required, a move interpreted as an attempt to reduce potential targeting based on affiliation with the agency.
The Broader Threat to Public Health
This incident highlights a dangerous trend of attacks on science and public health workers.Sarah Boim, a former CDC communications staffer who was laid off earlier this year, described the shooting as “the physical embodiment of the narrative that has taken over, attacking science, and attacking our federal workers.” The shooting serves as a stark reminder of the real-world consequences of spreading misinformation and fostering distrust in public institutions dedicated to protecting public health. The long-term impact on the CDC’s ability to function effectively and attract qualified personnel remains a significant concern.
