Hamas Rejects Temporary Ceasefire Proposal with Israel
The Palestinian group Hamas has rejected a proposal for a temporary ceasefire agreement with Israel, presented by Egyptian and Qatari mediators.
Hamas stated that the proposal “does not meet the needs of our people for security, stability, relief, and reconstruction,” as quoted by Israeli media.
The proposed agreement would have established a temporary ceasefire for a certain number of days, allowing for a partial exchange of prisoners and an increase in the number of trucks carrying humanitarian aid.
However, Hamas emphasized that the proposal did not include a final cessation of aggression, the withdrawal of occupying forces from the Gaza Strip, the return of displaced people, and the lifting of the siege.
The group is demanding the full and unconditional opening of checkpoints, particularly the Rafah checkpoint on the border with Egypt, and an end to Israel’s efforts to maintain control of the checkpoint.
Hamas is also seeking to have the needs of Gazans fully met, including access to food, housing, and medicine, as well as a serious exchange that would result in Israel ending the detention of Palestinian prisoners.
Despite rejecting the proposal, Hamas expressed openness to discussions aimed at achieving these goals.
The conflict between Hamas and Israel escalated on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants attacked Israel, resulting in the deaths of over 1,200 people and the capture of more than 250 hostages.
In response, Israel launched a military operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
