Northampton Store Partners with Grow Food Northampton to Fight Hunger

For the fourth consecutive year, Cedar Chest, a fixture in downtown Northampton’s Thornes Marketplace, is joining forces with Grow Food Northampton (GFN) to address food insecurity in the area. The initiative aims to boost the SNAP Match program, ensuring access to fresh, local food for all.
The “Give $10, Get $10” campaign allows Cedar Chest customers to donate $10 to GFN’s SNAP Match program. In return, donors receive a $10 gift card to Cedar Chest. the SNAP Match program effectively doubles the buying power of SNAP recipients at GFN’s farmers markets, including the Tuesday and winter markets. This ensures that individuals, regardless of income, can afford nutritious, locally sourced produce and other farm products.
Recent data indicates a concerning rise in hunger across Massachusetts. More than one in three households in Western Massachusetts struggle to secure enough food. Alarmingly, 67% of these households report at least one chronic health condition. Regular consumption of healthy, local food is proven to improve overall health and well-being. The SNAP Match program plays a crucial role in enabling many Northampton families to maintain a healthful diet.
The “Give $10, Get $10” promotion, launched June 15, offers a tangible way for the community to support both food access and local farms. Customers can simply visit Cedar Chest to make a donation and receive their gift card.
“The ‘Give $10, Get $10’ campaign is a simple but powerful way for our customers to support food access and local farms while shopping local,” said Alex Feinstein, co-owner of Cedar Chest.
Alisa Klein, co-executive director of Grow Food Northampton, emphasized the importance of the partnership. She said the “Give $10, Get $10” promotion allows everyone to play a role in ensuring that all members of the community have enough to eat and our local farms are supported to continue to feed our community for the long term.
