Celebrities Bring Early Christmas Cheer to Children in South Los Angeles
Holiday Magic Meets Hollywood: Baby2Baby Brings Joy to LA Kids in Need
Los Angeles, CA - Forget tinsel and twinkling lights, this holiday season, the real magic unfolded at BMO Stadium in South Los Angeles. Baby2Baby, the renowned nonprofit dedicated to providing essential items to children living in poverty, transformed the stadium into a winter wonderland, complete with sledding hills, toy shops, and even a chance to shoot penalty kicks with professional soccer players.
On a sunny December afternoon, hundreds of first, second, and third graders arrived, their eyes wide with wonder. the day was a carefully orchestrated symphony of joy, designed to give these children a taste of the holiday spirit they might otherwise miss.Musician Kelly Rowland, a longtime supporter of Baby2Baby and mother of two, was among the celebrities lending a hand. “Baby2Baby will put you to work and that’s the best part,” Rowland shared, emphasizing the organization’s hands-on approach. ”You can’t talk about it; you have to be about it.”
For Rowland, the experience is deeply personal. “I ran into a girl and she just talked, you know what I mean? She just talked. And as she’s talking, I’m listening and at moments, you want to tear up,” she said, reflecting on the vulnerability of the children she encountered.
Rowland finds inspiration in their resilience and selflessness, often witnessing children prioritize their siblings’ needs over their own. “I say, ‘That’s so sweet that you want to get something for your sister, but what do you want?’ And then I sneak an extra toy in there,” she said with a laugh.
Actress Olivia Wilde, another dedicated supporter, echoed the sentiment of empowerment. “One boy said to me, ‘I want to pick something small so I can make sure I keep it safe,'” she recalled. ”And I appreciated that he was sharing that, and he wanted me to help him find something that he knew he could keep for a long time.”
wilde emphasized the importance of choice and respect, stating,”It’s so marvelous to notice (the children at the event) feeling special and to know what it’s like when a kid feels taken seriously. I just think it’s about respect.”
Baby2Baby co-CEOs Norah Weinstein and Kelly Sawyer Patricof have built an organization that goes beyond simply providing necessities. They address the often-overlooked needs of families struggling with poverty, even manufacturing their own diapers to combat rising prices.
The involvement of their celebrity network has been instrumental in their success. “I think we’ve been very lucky with the group that we have assembled, and they couldn’t be more supportive. They’re not names on a piece of paper and they really show up for us, walk the walk,” Weinstein said.
As the sun set on BMO Stadium, the children departed, their faces beaming with joy, their arms laden with gifts. For Baby2Baby, it was another triumphant mission, reminding us all that even in the midst of hardship, the spirit of giving can create moments of pure magic.
