Dr. Sandra Lee, the dermatological surgeon and media personality known as Dr. Pimple Popper, has revealed that she suffered an ischemic stroke while filming her television series. In an interview with People magazine published April 14, 2026, Lee detailed the medical emergency and the subsequent recovery process she underwent to return to her professional duties.

The incident occurred on November 20, 2025, while Lee was seeing patients at her practice in Upland, California. At the time, cameras were rolling for the second season of her Lifetime series, Dr. Pimple Popper: Breaking Out. Lee reported that the onset of the stroke began with symptoms she initially misidentified as a hot flash, noting that she became super sweaty and felt that she didn’t feel like myself.

Progression of Symptoms and Diagnosis

As the day progressed, Lee’s condition deteriorated. While spending the evening at her parents’ home, she experienced a sense of restlessness and shooting pains in one of her legs. She also noted that she encountered difficulty when attempting to walk down the stairs.

By the following morning, the neurological deficits became more pronounced on the left side of her body. Lee recalled that when she held her hand out, it would just slowly collapse. She struggled with her speech, specifically regarding articulation and enunciation, leading her to question if she was having a stroke.

Following a recommendation from her father, who is also a dermatologist, Lee visited the emergency room. An MRI later confirmed that she had experienced an ischemic stroke. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this type of stroke occurs when blood clots or other particles block blood vessels to the brain, which prevents brain cells from receiving oxygen and causes them to die within minutes.

Recovery and Professional Impact

The immediate aftermath of the stroke required two months of intensive recovery. This period included occupational and physical therapy designed to help Lee regain her movement and equilibrium.

As a surgeon, Lee expressed particular anxiety regarding the functionality of her hands. She shared her concerns about the strength of her grip and the level of control she maintained over her left hand, stating that it was very scary to feel as though she was not at her best.

Lee stated that she is now pretty much back to normal, although she continues to notice that she does not speak exactly as she did prior to the stroke.
