Cellugy, a Danish biotech firm, has secured €8.1 million in EU funding to scale up production of EcoFLEXY, a biodegradable material designed to replace microplastics in cosmetics. The funding, granted under the EU’s LIFE Program, will support the commercialization of this cellulose-based choice for creams, gels, and toothpaste.
EcoFLEXY aims to match the performance of carbomers,which are traditionally used for their smoothing and shelf-life extending properties in cosmetics. Carbomers currently dominate the market, despite concerns linking them to microplastic pollution and potential health side effects. Cellugy estimates EcoFLEXY could prevent 259 tons of microplastic pollution annually, scaling to over 1,200 tons by 2034.
The funding will also support process optimization and environmental validation, in partnership with The Footprint Firm, a Danish consultancy, and Sci2sc, a Berlin-based AI company that develops AI agents for biotech firms.
“Our role is to optimise every layer of production so that EcoFLEXY can compete not just on environmental benefits, but on cost and performance metrics that matter to manufacturers,” said Angelina Lesnikova, CEO of Sci2sc.
