Today represents a further and more serious escalation,
Celtic Football Club stated after protesters interrupted the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews on Oct. 4, 2026, by throwing tennis balls onto the 15th green.
Protesters Target Dermot Desmond at St. Andrews
The DP World Tour golf tournament experienced a bizarre interruption during the third round on Oct. 4, 2026, when dozens of tennis balls rained down near the 15th green at the Old Course. Desmond was competing in the concurrent pro-am portion of the event alongside PGA Tour star Brooks Koepka.
Video footage posted to the platform X by the Celtic Fans Collective documented the incident. The supporters’ group claimed full responsibility for the demonstration, stating that the action was designed to protest what they perceive as a lack of accountability from Desmond in his management of the Glasgow-based Scottish Premiership club. According to the group’s statement published by sports.yahoo.com, Desmond has used his immense wealth to shield himself from supporters.
Celtic FC Sever Ties With Supporters Group
Celtic Football Club issued a stern rebuke following the disruption, condemning the action as a premeditated stunt that brought shame upon the club’s century-old reputation. The organization emphasized that the demonstration crossed a line by targeting an individual at an entirely unrelated sporting event while he participated in a private capacity. Consequently, the club declared that it will immediately cut all ties with the Celtic Fans Collective and cease recognizing them as a representative body for supporters.
Club officials also announced that any individuals identified as having planned, facilitated, or participated in the St. Andrews protest will face indefinite bans from Celtic Park. The organization asserted that it will not submit to coercion or organized disruptions from fan groups.

The Club will not be intimidated or coerced by organized acts of disruption… The Club no longer accepts that the Celtic Fans Collective can credibly claim to represent the wider Celtic support.
