A Disappointing First Leg
Celtic’s Champions League ambitions suffered a setback on Tuesday, drawing 0-0 with Kairat Almaty in the first leg of their play-off tie at Celtic Park. The result leaves Brendan Rodgers’ side with a significant challenge ahead of next week’s return leg in Kazakhstan, a daunting 7,000-mile round trip.
This match also marked Rodgers’ 800th as a manager, but lacked the expected early dominance from Celtic. The Kazakh side proved a formidable opponent, effectively neutralizing the Hoops’ attacking threat.
Tactical Adjustments and Missed Opportunities
Seeking to break the deadlock, Rodgers made tactical changes at the start of the second half, substituting Adam Idah with Yang Hyun-jun and shifting Daizen Maeda to a central forward position. These adjustments did increase Celtic’s attacking pressure, but a goal remained elusive despite ten minutes of added time.
A crucial opportunity went begging late in the game when Maeda found himself through on goal, only to deliver a tame shot easily saved by Temirlan Anarbekov, the Kairat goalkeeper who had replaced the injured Alexandr Zarutskiy in the 75th minute.
Team Lineups and early Setbacks
Rodgers opted for six changes to his starting lineup, bringing in Kasper Schmeichel, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Liam Scales, Reo hatate, Benjamin Nygren, and Idah. This meant Viljami Sinisalo, Dane Murray, Auston Trusty, Arne Engels, luke McCowan, and Johnny Kenny were left on the bench.
The match saw an early scare for Celtic when Aleksandr Martynovich, Kairat’s captain, had a goal disallowed for offside in the 11th minute. The visitors, led by the promising 17-year-old Dastan Satpayev – a player reportedly set to join Chelsea – settled quickly and posed a threat on the counter-attack.
A significant blow came in the 32nd minute when Celtic defender Alastair Johnston sustained a hamstring injury and was forced to leave the field on a stretcher, replaced by Anthony Ralston.
Frustration Mounts
As the game wore on without a breakthrough, frustration grew among the Celtic faithful. A lack of recent transfer activity appeared to contribute to the discontent, with some supporters chanting “sack the board” in the closing stages of the match.
Despite mounting a significant number of corners, Celtic were unable to convert their opportunities. Kairat, meanwhile, actively wasted time, attempting to see out the draw.
