Celtics Owner Wyc Grousbeck Confident in Team’s Championship Potential Amid Ownership Changes
Boston Celtics Celebrate 18th Championship at White House
Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck plans to run the team for the next three years, despite the ongoing sale of the franchise’s controlling stake. He expressed confidence that the team can defend its NBA championship title this season.
Grousbeck spoke during a call with reporters after a ceremony at the White House, where President Joe Biden celebrated the Celtics’ record-setting 18th title. Grousbeck stated, “I think we’re contenders this year, and we can be contenders in the future.”
The ownership group, Boston Basketball Partners, L.L.C., announced its intention to sell the majority stake in 2024 or early 2025. Grousbeck is expected to remain in charge until the sale is completed in 2028.
Currently, the Celtics have a strong start to the season, entering a game against the Washington Wizards with a 12-3 record, trailing only the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Grousbeck enjoyed the celebration at the White House, which included prominent figures from Massachusetts. He emphasized that the team remains focused on the season ahead, with coach Joe Mazzulla promoting a forward-looking approach.
Guard Derrick White, a first-time NBA champion, expressed excitement about visiting the White House. He found the experience thrilling and appreciated viewing the Oval Office.
President Biden also joined in the celebrations, joking about his Secret Service name being “Celtic.” He received a Celtics jersey from star player Jayson Tatum, making the event even more memorable for the players and staff.
