Celtics Secure Rookie Center Amari Williams with Two-Year Contract
The Boston Celtics have signed rookie center Amari Williams to a two-year, $2.7 million standard NBA contract, February 6, 2026, according to his agent. The move comes after the team traded Chris Boucher to the Utah Jazz on Thursday.
Williams, drafted in the second round out of Kentucky, has appeared in 13 games for Boston this season, including two starts in late January. He made a notable impact during the Celtics’ double-overtime victory against the Brooklyn Nets on , contributing pivotal plays late in the game. He also recorded a career-high nine points and seven rebounds in a win over the Portland Trail Blazers on .
“I thought he looked exceptional,” teammate Jaylen Brown said following the January 26th game against Portland.
In addition to his appearances with the Celtics, Williams has played in 21 games for the Maine Celtics, Boston’s G League affiliate, where he averaged 15.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks.
Head coach Joe Mazzulla has recently favored Williams over veteran centers Xavier Tillman and Boucher, utilizing him as the team’s third center behind Neemias Queta and Luka Garza. The Celtics traded Boucher along with a second-round draft pick to Utah ahead of the NBA trade deadline, a pick originally acquired in a trade for Anfernee Simons and Nikola Vucevic.
This marks the third consecutive season the Celtics have converted a two-way player to a standard contract, following previous conversions of Neemias Queta in 2024 and JD Davison in 2025. However, those previous conversions occurred later in the regular season.
Williams is expected to be fourth in the Celtics’ center rotation, behind Vucevic, Queta, and Garza. The role of Vucevic, a 35-year-old veteran in his 15th NBA season, remains to be determined, with uncertainty surrounding whether he will start or come off the bench.
