The ‍potential sale of Cemex’s ‌operations in Colombia has recently garnered significant attention. ⁢Cemex, a mexican company, established its presence in Colombia 29 years ago through‌ the acquisition of Cementos Diamante and Cementos Samper.

Strategic shift: Focusing on North America and Europe

This potential⁣ sale coincides with the multinational corporation’s⁣ declaration of several changes to‍ its executive team, effective April 1st. These changes also involve Colombia. Alejandro Ramírez Cantú,the‍ current president for Colombia and Peru, will now lead Cemex South America,Central America, and the Caribbean, consolidating these regions.

However, the most‍ significant change ⁢is the departure of global president Fernando González. he will be replaced by Jaime muguiro, the current ⁣president for ⁢the⁤ United States. Consequently, Jesús González Herrera, president of Cemex South America,‌ Central America, ⁤and the⁤ Caribbean, will take over operations in ⁤the United States, succeeding Jaime Muguiro.

According to Bloomberg,Cemex intends‍ to concentrate on North ⁣America and Europe. As part of this strategy, the company is reportedly considering selling its non-essential assets.

Thus, Cemex is allegedly seeking a buyer for its Colombian business, ⁣with‍ an asking price ⁣between $700 million and $1 billion. Potential buyers include Holcim, the world’s largest cement⁢ company based in Switzerland, and Cementos Molins of Spain.

Colombia’s Cement Market Landscape

Cemex Colombia ranks as the second-largest company in the country’s cement market, according to the 2023 report on Colombia’s 1,000 largest companies by the Superintendency of ⁤Companies.

In 2023, cemex Colombia’s revenue exceeded 2.02 trillion ⁤pesos, reflecting ⁢a 35 percent‍ decrease compared to the previous year. Furthermore, the company’s profits experienced a substantial decline, falling from 1.3 trillion pesos in 2022 to 46.941 billion pesos in 2023, ‌a decrease of 96.5 percent.

Cementos argos precedes Cemex Colombia in the rankings. In 2023, Cementos Argos reported sales of 2.9 trillion pesos, a 17 percent increase compared to the previous year. Its profits doubled to ‌319.976 billion pesos.

Other key players in the sector include Holcim,Concretos Argos,Empresa Colombiana de Cementos (owner ⁢of the Alión brand),and Ultracem. Collectively, these six companies⁤ generated ⁤over 9.03 trillion pesos in revenue ‍in 2023.

Potential Market Impact

These‌ figures from the Superintendency of Companies illustrate the ⁢scale of Cemex’s business. If the sale ⁤of its Colombian operations is confirmed,‍ the ‌new owner would acquire more than 20 percent of the country’s cement sales.

Cemex has 31 plants producing cement, concrete, additives, and ⁣dry mortar in Bogotá, Cundinamarca,⁤ Antioquia, Ibagué, ⁣Pereira, Neiva, Valle⁣ del Cauca, Santander, Cúcuta, and Barranquilla.

The company also operates a ‍business unit, Cemex Energy, dedicated to generating and selling electricity.Cemex Energy currently owns three hydroelectric plants that supply electricity for the company’s operations.

Cementos Argos Expresses ‍Disinterest

Currently, Cementos Argos, Colombia’s leading cement company, has stated it is not interested in acquiring Cemex’s Colombian operations. Jorge Mario Velásquez, president of Grupo Argos, recently clarified the company’s position.

While Grupo Argos continuously evaluates “alternativas de inversión inteligentes y rentables” (“smart and profitable investment alternatives”), the company is particularly focused on opportunities in the United‌ States.

Velásquez emphasized ⁣that “no hace sentido, desde el punto de vista ⁣económico” (“it doesn’t make sense, from an economic point of view”) for Cementos Argos ⁢to acquire Cemex’s assets, given its leading position in the Colombian market and its existing production capacity.

Furthermore, the Superintendency of Industry and commerce would likely disapprove of‍ such a transaction due to concerns about ‍excessive market concentration.

Lo digo directamente: no tenemos interés en mirar ‍esos activos en Colombia.
Jorge Mario Velásquez, presidente de Grupo Argos

Velásquez reiterated, “I say it directly: we have no interest in looking at those assets in Colombia.”
