Central Catholic High School announced the hiring of Greg Honecker as its next head wrestling coach on May 22, 2026, according to reporting from The Intelligencer.
Honecker takes over the leadership of the Maroon Knight program from Rick Welker, who stepped down from the position after five seasons.
The new head coach arrives at Central Catholic with a coaching background established at Bridgeport. Honecker served as an assistant coach at Bridgeport from 2020 until 2025, a tenure that followed two seasons of working with the Bulldogs’ junior high program.
A 2001 graduate of Bridgeport High School, Honecker also brings experience from the football field. He spent the 2024 and 2025 seasons working with the offensive and defensive lines for the Junior Knights football program and was a member of the varsity staff at Bridgeport from 2018 until 2024.
Program Context and Expectations
Honecker inherits a program with a recent history of success. The Maroon Knights finished as the state runner-up in Class A during the winter of 2025-2026 and previously secured a team title in Huntington.

Honecker described the appointment as both an honor and a challenge,
stating that the position offers an opportunity to lead, teach and inspire far beyond wrestling.
He expressed gratitude for the role and his intention to become part of the CCHS family.
The coach noted that the opportunity allows him to shape the direction of the program, develop the skills of the wrestlers, and establish a team culture that reflects his values. He emphasized a commitment to teaching discipline, respect and accountability on and off the mat.
We want to maintain a positive attitude in all practices and matches, while being consistent, coachable and mentally tough. We want our guys to get better every day.
Greg Honecker
Honecker and his wife, Kristen, have a son, Landon, who will enroll as a freshman at Central Catholic High School in the fall of 2026.
