New Air-Conditioned Pedestrian Link Opens in Central, Replacing Decades-Old Footbridge
A new, fully air-conditioned pedestrian passageway connecting IFC Mall and the Central Pier concourse officially opened today, , according to Henderson Land Development Company Limited. The opening coincides with the permanent closure and eventual dismantling of the existing footbridge, which has served the area for nearly two decades.
The new passageway, located at Central Yards, is designed to provide a more comfortable and seamless walking experience for commuters and visitors. It features a 24-hour air-conditioning system and incorporates artistic elements, enhancing the harborfront connectivity. A section of the passageway near the Central Pier is designed as a semi-open space.
Henderson Land announced the opening, stating that the new temporary passageway will serve as an upgrade to the previous connection. The existing footbridge, which linked the International Finance Centre (IFC) to the Central Pier, ceased operation on .
The development of the new passageway was necessitated by ongoing construction work in the area. The current footbridge was situated above a construction site, prompting the need for a temporary alternative.
While the current passageway is temporary, Henderson Land indicated that it will eventually be replaced by a more permanent structure. When the first phase of the Central Yards commercial development is complete, the temporary passageway will be dismantled and transformed into a multi-functional green space with harbor views. Pedestrians will then be able to access the waterfront and IFC via the new commercial development’s internal walkways.
The Central Yards project is progressing, with the first phase slated for completion this year and a planned opening in 2027. The second phase of the development is expected to be finished in 2032.
The new passageway aims to improve pedestrian flow and provide a more pleasant experience for those traveling between IFC Mall and the Central Pier, particularly during warmer months. The addition of air conditioning addresses a common concern for pedestrians using the previous open-air footbridge.
