The remains discovered near the former residence of Gustavo Cerati, the iconic musician and leader of the band Soda Stereo, have been identified as those of Diego Fernández Lima, a teenager who disappeared two years ago. The revelation has reopened a painful chapter for his family and prompted a renewed look at the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Discovery and identification Process
The bone remains were initially found in a lot adjacent too the property where Cerati once lived. Following the discovery, prosecutor López Perrando launched an examination, collaborating with the esteemed Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF). The EAAF undertook a meticulous analysis of the remains, a process that ultimately led to the identification of the victim. At the end of June, EAAF specialists presented a report to prosecutor López Perrando detailing their findings. Experts determined the bones belonged to a male between 16 and 19 years old who had suffered a violent death.
“It was a violent death, without a doubt,” a judicial source told La Nación. ”It is indeed not known if the stab caused death, but with certainty we certainly know that the boy was stabbed. The short wound was at the height of the fourth rib, as behind the arm. There are also signs that the body tried to dismembered.”
A Case Marked by Frustration and Time
despite the identification, the case is highly likely closed due to the statute of limitations. The initial police investigation was criticized by Diego’s father, juan Benigno Fernández Lima, who expressed frustration with the lack of effort.
“The police say that they have 3000 equal cases. And notice how absurd: from the first moment they caught him ‘Home leak’,” he told the magazine This!. “I protested and know what they told me? That the forms were printed. I refused to that, but it was as if nothing. What do you want them to investigate if they are already assumed that he left, I didn’t rob me.”
Diego Fernández Lima: A Life Cut Short
On the afternoon of his disappearance, diego, after returning from school and lunch, asked his father for money to pay a group and go to a friend’s house. He was a promising young footballer, playing in the youth divisions of Club Excursionistas.
The Excursionist Athletic Club released a statement expressing their sorrow upon learning of Diego’s identification: “the Excursionist Athletic Club expresses its stupor and sadness for the news about Diego Fernández Lima, who was a footballer of our institution at the time of his disappearance. We send our condolences and a big hug to your whole family and we want your soul to finally rest in peace.”
The identification of Diego Fernández Lima brings a degree of closure to his family, but also underscores the tragic reality of unsolved cases and the importance of thorough investigations. While justice may not be served in a legal sense, the hope remains that his memory will be honored and his family can find some measure of peace.
