The Spanish comedy that became a global cinematic phenomenon has generated 60 million dollars worldwide and nine international remakes before finally arriving in Spain this Friday, El Diario reported. What started as a modest single-set stage production in Barcelona has evolved into a major international property, culminating in a Hollywood adaptation that is currently positioning itself as an early Oscar contender.
Ten Million Euros and Nine International Remakes
Written and directed originally by Cesc Gay as the stage play Els veïns de dalt
on March 19, 2015, the property followed a steady path of expansion across borders. After packing theaters in Barcelona and Madrid, Gay adapted it into the 2020 film Sentimental,
which grossed 733,364 euros post-COVID. That local success sparked a wave of international adaptations starting with Italy’s Vicini di casa
in 2022, followed by versions in Switzerland, France, Russia, the Czech Republic, South Korea, the Netherlands, and Portugal.
The trajectory shifted decisively when Hollywood acquired the English-language rights in March 2021. After initial development stalled with earlier directors and cast members, the project landed with director Olivia Wilde and screenwriters Rashida Jones and McCormack under the title The Invite.
Following a competitive bidding war at the Sundance Festival, A24 secured the US distribution rights for 10 million euros after Wilde turned down a doubled offer from Netflix to ensure a theatrical release, according to El Diario.
Sharp Feminist Revision and Star Performances
The American adaptation distinguishes itself through a sharper, modern script by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack that complexifies female characters and anchors the domestic disputes in contemporary pressures like class and housing. Wilde’s direction departs from the static limitations of the original single-room stage setting by utilizing thriller-style musical cues, rapid editing, and precise framing to convey emotional states through spatial architecture.
Led by a cast featuring Seth Rogen, Edward Norton, Olivia Wilde, and Penélope Cruz, the film relies on sharp comic timing and frantic energy.
Oscar Buzz and Historical Precedents
Four months after its June release in the United States, The Invite
has accumulated 60 million dollars globally and remains a prominent fixture in early Academy Award forecasts. El Diario noted that the forthcoming Spanish release arrives carrying substantial awards-season momentum, particularly concerning a potential milestone for Penélope Cruz.

Cruz could make Academy history by securing two nominations in the same category in a single year, a possibility opened by recent rules changes and supported by her work in both The Invite
and La bola negra.
When estrenas tres películas en un año, si una sale bien y conecta con el público ya es una especie de milagro, pero que pase con las tres es raro. Y es sano que me siga sorprendiendo.
Penélope Cruz
With international rollouts continuing and domestic audiences finally gaining access to the ninth version of Gay’s original premise, the production stands as one of the most widely adapted contemporary Spanish intellectual properties to cross over into major studio Hollywood territory.
