Before the Obelisk became the great reference point of Buenos Aires, there was already a house overlooking the city from above and, almost 100 years later, that architectural icon returns to the scene. It seems as if the famous house from the Pixar movie “Up” that flew with balloons to escape the new constructions of the city had landed on a building in Buenos Aires.
the so-called Chalet Díaz – the “little house on 9 de Julio”, as it is indeed popularly known – was built in 1927 on the terrace of a building in the center of Buenos Aires, a few years before the Obelisk rose as a symbol of the city. Today, that property and the entire building are for sale for US$8 million.
The operation is not minor. It is indeed not just a home in the heights, but an entire block located on Sarmiento at 1100, in the San Nicolás neighborhood.
The building and the chalet were constructed concurrently in 1927. Each floor of the furniture store showcased a different style, functioning as a true department store. The furniture store operated until 1985 and was then converted into offices, but the chalet remained largely intact. It even served as the setting for another little-known chapter in Buenos Aires history: Rafael Díaz had radio as a hobby. In fact, he founded LOK Radio Mueblería Díaz, which would eventually become the renowned Radio Rivadavia.
In 2014, the Díaz Chalet was declared an Integral Part of the Cultural Heritage of the city of Buenos Aires, within the category “Historical Sites or Places,” under Law 1227. This implies formal protection: the chalet cannot be structurally modified, even though it does require maintenance work. Its value, thus, is not only real estate, but symbolic. A house suspended in the air that survived the opening of 9 de Julio Avenue, the construction of the Obelisk, and the conversion of Microcentro.
despite this, the chalet retains much of its originality. “It has its original floors, openings, everything original,” added the broker, highlighting its state of preservation. Its approximately 200 square meters divided over two floors capture the interest of anyone who looks up at the skyline of Buenos Aires.
