Challengers Panel Insights: Luca Guadagnino on Desire Over Tennis
Luca Guadagnino is the director of the film Challengers. Justin Kuritzkes, the writer, shared that Guadagnino admitted, “I know next to nothing about tennis but I know a great deal about desire.” This statement highlighted Guadagnino’s focus on the emotional aspects of the story rather than the sport itself.
At a panel for Challengers in Los Angeles, Kuritzkes spoke alongside Guadagnino, producer Amy Pascal, and actor Josh O’Connor. Pascal noted that the film explores how people cope with fear. She said, “It’s about three people who desperately don’t want something to happen… then it does… and they’re okay.” This theme emphasizes how individuals often live in fear of events that may not be as catastrophic as they imagine.
Despite the tennis theme, the panel revealed that the moderator, Pete Hammond, had the most tennis experience among them, while Guadagnino humorously stated his lack of knowledge of the sport.
The actors underwent a tennis boot camp led by coach Brad Gilbert. O’Connor mentioned that the training improved his confidence. He felt that through rigorous training, he embodied the character’s traits effectively.
Viewers are encouraged to check back for the panel video on Monday.
