Champions Cup: Peato Mauvaka’s Season Likely Over
Mauvaka Knee Injury sidelines Toulouse Hooker, Season in Doubt
TOULOUSE, France (AP) — Peato Mauvaka, the international hooker for Stade Toulousain, suffered a serious knee injury during training Tuesday, casting a shadow over the team’s upcoming Champions Cup semi-final and potentially ending his season prematurely.
The injury is a significant blow to Toulouse, already contending with a series of setbacks. Sources indicate Mauvaka sustained the injury during tuesday afternoon’s training session. Initial concerns were quickly confirmed; reports from “Toulouse stadium news” indicate damage to the cruciate ligaments.
The injury likely concludes the season for the 28-year-old french international, who has 42 caps. Beyond missing Sunday’s Champions Cup semi-final in Bordeaux,Mauvaka is unlikely to participate in a potential final or the Top 14 final phase. There are concerns he may not return to play until 2026. This represents a setback for Mauvaka,a key player in france’s recent Six Nations Championship victory, where he started in all five matches.
Marchand to Lead; Cramont and Lacumber Step up
The club is also grappling with the absence of another leader, Antoine Dupont, who suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during France’s match in Ireland in March. Dupont, widely regarded as the world’s best player, underwent surgery just over a month ago. While Angel Capuozzo has returned from an ankle injury sooner than anticipated, Blair Kinghorn is sidelined with a minor knee sprain, expected to keep him off the field for at least three weeks.
In the coming weeks, Stade Toulousain will rely on its current captain, Julien Marchand, at hooker. The 29-year-old French international, with 45 selections, will assume a crucial leadership role both on the field and in the locker room. Coach Ugo Mola and his staff will also look to younger players Guillaume Cramont, 24, and Thomas Lacumber, 20, to provide support. Cramont has been a reliable contributor for several seasons, while Lacumber has impressed in his initial appearances with the professional team.
