Champions League: Dortmund Eliminated by Atalanta in Thrilling Tie

Atalanta Completes Stunning Champions League Comeback, Eliminates Borussia Dortmund

Bergamo, Italy – February 26, 2026 – Atalanta secured a dramatic and improbable place in the Champions League last 16, overcoming a 2-0 first-leg deficit to defeat Borussia Dortmund 4-1 on Wednesday night. A stoppage-time penalty, awarded after a VAR review and a chaotic sequence of events, sealed a 4-3 aggregate victory for the Italian side, sending Dortmund crashing out of the competition.

Gianluca Scamacca opened the scoring for Atalanta in the 5th minute, igniting hopes of a comeback. Davide Zappacosta then leveled the tie before halftime, capitalizing on a deflection to make it 2-0 on the night. Mario Pasalic extended Atalanta’s lead to 3-0 in the 57th minute, seemingly putting the tie beyond Dortmund’s reach.

However, Dortmund, runners-up in 2024, refused to surrender. Karim Adeyemi pulled a goal back in the 75th minute, injecting tension into the closing stages and threatening to force extra time. The game appeared destined for an additional 30 minutes until a controversial penalty decision in the 98th minute dramatically altered the outcome.

The decisive moment arrived after Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel’s mistake led to an Atalanta attack. A cross into the area was met with a reckless challenge from Dortmund defender Ramy Bensebaini, who caught Atalanta substitute Nikola Krstovic on the head with a high boot. Initially, a corner was awarded, but a subsequent VAR review overturned the decision, resulting in a penalty for Atalanta and a red card for Bensebaini. Adding to the drama, Dortmund substitute Nico Schlotterbeck was also shown a red card for vehemently protesting the decision from the bench.

Lazar Samardzic calmly converted the penalty, sending Atalanta through to the last 16 where they will face either Arsenal or Bayern Munich, with the draw scheduled for Friday.

The match was marked by a particularly fiery finish, with the penalty decision sparking considerable debate. ESPN analysts Frank Leboeuf and Gab Marcotti reportedly clashed over the validity of the call, highlighting the contentious nature of the incident. The late penalty, coupled with the two red cards, created a chaotic and unforgettable conclusion to the tie.

The victory represents a significant achievement for Atalanta, who had been widely written off after their first-leg defeat in Germany. “Everyone had written us off,” said Davide Zappacosta, underscoring the team’s resilience and determination. The result ensures continued Italian representation in the Champions League knockout stages.

Adding another layer to the evening’s events, Dortmund competed without the visible support of their organized fan base. The “Südtribüne Dortmund” alliance cited police measures against supporters from the ultra scene as the reason for their absence, stating that the actions taken constituted a “novelty” in their nearly 16 years of continuous participation in European competition.

The game also saw Marco Carnesecchi, Atalanta’s goalkeeper, make a crucial save in the 49th minute, denying Serhou Guirassy’s low drive and preserving his team’s two-goal advantage at the time. Dortmund also came close to scoring in the 53rd minute when Maximilian Beier’s shot bounced off the post, further emphasizing the narrow margins that defined the contest.

The dramatic turnaround and controversial ending are sure to be talking points for days to come, but for Atalanta, the focus now shifts to preparing for their last-16 clash against either Arsenal or Bayern Munich. The Italian side will undoubtedly approach the tie with confidence, buoyed by their remarkable victory over a strong Dortmund team.
