Champions League Playoffs: Inter, Newcastle & Leverkusen in Action – Feb 24, 2026

February 24, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

The UEFA Champions League knockout round playoff stage is underway, with several teams battling for a place in the Round of 16. Tuesday’s action saw Inter Milan attempting to overcome a first-leg deficit against Bodø/Glimt, Newcastle United looking to seal their progression against Qarabağ, and Bayer Leverkusen hosting Olympiacos.

Inter Milan Face Uphill Battle Against Bodø/Glimt

At the San Siro, Inter Milan entered their match against Bodø/Glimt needing to overturn a 3-1 deficit from the first leg. Despite being Serie A leaders, Inter found themselves locked in a goalless stalemate at halftime, still trailing 3-1 on aggregate. The pressure is mounting on Cristian Chivu’s side to find a breakthrough in the second half and avoid an unexpected exit from the competition. Chivu expressed confidence in his team’s ability to turn the tie around, stating, “They know that if there’s one team that can overturn this result, it’s us — without disrespecting anyone. Bodo are organized and play with intensity and determination.” He emphasized the need for Inter to match that intensity and “add something extra.” The winners of this tie will face either Manchester City or Sporting Clube de Portugal.

Newcastle United on the Brink of Qualification

Newcastle United appeared to be in a comfortable position heading into their second leg against Qarabağ, holding a significant 6-1 lead from the first encounter. However, manager Eddie Howe cautioned against complacency, emphasizing the need for professionalism. “We’ve got to be professional in every moment,” Howe said. “We know how football can change – we’ve just seen that, we’ve won three games in the blink of an eye and the feeling is very different.” He stressed the importance of respecting their opponents and maintaining a high level of performance. While a comfortable victory seemed likely, Howe’s words underscored the unpredictable nature of the game.

Atlético Madrid Advance, USMNT’s Johnny Makes His Mark

Earlier on Tuesday, Atlético Madrid secured their place in the Round of 16 with a 4-1 victory over Club Brugge (7-4 on aggregate). A standout performance came from USMNT midfielder Johnny, who scored a stunning goal to break the deadlock in the second half. Alexander Sørloth added a brace to complete the rout. Johnny was the only American player in Champions League action on Tuesday. Atléti will now face either Liverpool or Tottenham in the next round.

Bayer Leverkusen and Olympiacos Deadlocked

Bayer Leverkusen and Olympiacos played to a 0-0 draw in the first half of their match at BayArena, maintaining a 2-0 aggregate lead for Leverkusen. The match is being played without the injured Malik Tillman.

Champions League Playoff Drama Unfolds

The Champions League knockout round playoffs are proving to be a captivating stage, with several ties hanging in the balance. Inter Milan’s struggle against Bodø/Glimt highlights the challenges even top teams face in this format, while Newcastle United’s commanding lead demonstrates the rewards of a strong first-leg performance. The competition is heating up as teams vie for a coveted spot in the Round of 16, promising further drama and excitement in the weeks to come.

The winners of the Newcastle-Qarabag tie will face either Arsenal or Bayern Munich in the next round.
