Championship Roundup: Southampton Thrash QPR, Wrexham Win, & Play-Off Picture Takes Shape

February 25, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

Southampton delivered a resounding statement of intent in the Championship, dismantling QPR 5-0 at St Mary’s. The victory propelled Saints to seventh in the league standings, continuing a remarkable run of seven league games without defeat. Elsewhere, Wrexham’s push for a fourth consecutive promotion continued with a hard-fought win, while Middlesbrough stumbled to a draw against Leicester.

Southampton’s Statement Win

Finn Azaz opened the scoring for Southampton in the 10th minute, bending a brilliant shot into the bottom corner after a flowing move involving Ryan Manning and Leo Scienza. The Republic of Ireland international’s goal set the tone for a dominant performance. Kuryu Matsuki then took center stage, scoring twice – once before and once after the half-time break – to extend Southampton’s lead. Leo Scienza added a fourth, and James Bree capped off the rout with a stunning strike from outside the box.

The win marked a significant moment for head coach Tonda Eckert, who secured his sixth league victory against QPR. Eckert had previously overseen a 2-1 win against the same opposition earlier in the season, initially as interim manager. The team’s performance showcased a blend of attacking flair and defensive solidity, leaving QPR seven points adrift of the play-off places.

Wrexham Maintain Momentum

Promoted Wrexham continued their impressive campaign with a 2-1 victory over Portsmouth at Stok Cae Ras. Sam Smith and Max Cleworth found the net in the first half, giving the Red Dragons a comfortable lead. Portsmouth rallied in the second half, with Zak Swanson pulling a goal back, but were unable to find an equalizer despite applying considerable pressure. The result underscores Wrexham’s ability to compete at a higher level and maintain their promotion ambitions.

Mixed Fortunes for Championship Contenders

Middlesbrough’s promotion charge hit a snag as they drew 1-1 with Leicester at the Riverside. Caleb Okoli gave Leicester the lead with a header from a free-kick, but Riley McGree leveled the score on the stroke of half-time. The draw leaves Middlesbrough two points behind league leaders Coventry, who are yet to play this week. For Leicester, it’s a second consecutive league draw under new manager Gary Rowett, offering a glimmer of hope in their relegation battle.

Hull Consolidate Play-Off Spot

Hull City strengthened their position in the play-off race with a 4-2 win over Derby County at the MKM Stadium. An early own goal from Callum Elder gave Hull the lead, but Craig Forsyth quickly responded for Derby. Oli McBurnie restored Hull’s advantage, only for Sammie Szmodics to equalize before half-time. Second-half goals from John Egan and Lewis Koumas sealed the victory for the Tigers, with Egan displaying instinctive finishing prowess.

Pressure Mounts on West Brom Manager

Charlton Athletic piled more pressure on West Brom head coach Eric Ramsay with a 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns. George Campbell ended Albion’s 405-minute goal drought with a late header, but Lyndon Dykes quickly responded for Charlton, leaving Ramsay without a win in his eight league games in charge. West Brom’s inability to convert numerous opportunities highlighted their struggles under the new manager.

Ipswich Boost Promotion Hopes

Ipswich Town boosted their automatic promotion hopes with a 2-0 win at Watford. Sindre Walle Egeli and George Hirst scored the goals for Kieran McKenna’s side, moving them up to third in the table. Watford’s Tom Ince had a late penalty saved by Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton, denying them a potential lifeline.

Late Drama at Swansea

Swansea City rescued a point with a stoppage-time equalizer in a 1-1 draw against Preston North End. Daniel Jebbison ended an 11-game scoring drought to give Preston the lead, but Liam Cullen headed home in the fifth minute of added time, much to the delight of co-owner Snoop Dogg. Preston remain five points off the play-off places, while Swansea are three points further back.

Bristol City Overcome Blackburn

Emil Riis Jakobsen inspired Bristol City to a 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Yuki Ohashi had given Rovers an early lead, but Riis equalized and then set up Scott Twine for the winning goal. Despite a spirited second-half effort, Blackburn were unable to find an equalizer, with Radek Vitek’s late save unable to prevent defeat. This marked Michael O’Neill’s first loss as Blackburn manager.
