Changes in 2025: Will People Working from Home and on Business Trips Benefit?
Work-From-Home Allowance Sees Modest Increase in 2024
Millions of Americans working remotely will see a slight bump in their work-from-home allowance starting in January 2024. The adjustment, announced by the Department of Labor, increases the monthly stipend from $4.50 to $4.80 per day, based on an average 8-hour workday.
This translates to an extra $0.30 per day, or roughly $6 per month for the average worker. The allowance is intended to help offset the costs associated with working from home, such as increased utility bills and internet usage.”The total amount is calculated based on data regarding the hourly consumption of one adult in an average household,” the Department of Labor stated.
the work-from-home allowance was introduced last year as part of a broader update to labor laws. While the allowance provides a baseline, employers are not obligated to adhere to it and can choose to offer a higher amount or no allowance at all, depending on individual agreements.
Initially, the Department of Labor proposed setting the allowance as a minimum requirement. However, this faced opposition from employer groups who argued that it woudl unfairly advantage remote workers compared to those who commute to traditional workplaces. They pointed out that remote workers frequently enough save money on transportation and lunch expenses.
Other Changes for 2024
In addition to the work-from-home allowance increase, the department of Labor also announced adjustments to per diem rates for meals during business travel. These rates will vary depending on the length of the trip and whether the employer is in the private or public sector.
