A formal signing ceremony took place today, February 5, 2026, marking the beginning of a project that local officials and the community have long awaited. The initiative, backed by an investment exceeding 838,000 euros, promises to transform the aging facility into a modern sporting hub.

The signing ceremony was attended by key figures including Granadilla de Abona Mayor José Domingo Regalado, Councilor for Works Marcos Antonio Rodríguez, Councilor for Sports Fredi Oramas, CD Charco del Pino President Domingo Donate, and Interinsular Football Federation President Alejandro Morales, underscoring the broad support for the project.

The project’s initial phase, which was put out to tender in September 2025, carries a budget of 838,921.01 euros and an estimated completion timeframe of four months. This first stage will focus on fundamental improvements, laying the groundwork for future enhancements.

Central to the initial phase is the replacement of the existing playing surface with state-of-the-art artificial turf. Alongside this, a new irrigation system will be installed, addressing long-standing concerns about field maintenance and sustainability. Crucially, the project also includes the foundational work for a future LED lighting system, a significant upgrade intended to improve visibility and extend playing hours.

Mayor Regalado emphasized the importance of the renovation, stating, “We continue to improve sports facilities that are very necessary. The works that begin in Charco del Pino respond to a great demand and allow us to fulfill the commitment made, which will be a reality in the coming months.” This sentiment reflects the municipality’s broader commitment to upgrading its sporting infrastructure.

Councilor for Works, Marcos Antonio Rodríguez, further elaborated on the project’s scope, stating it is “an important step within our commitment to the Master Plan for the Improvement of Municipal Sports Infrastructures and that its objective is to update and dignify the sports facilities of the entire municipality.” This suggests the Charco del Pino renovation is part of a larger, coordinated effort to enhance sporting opportunities across Granadilla de Abona.

The project’s progression was contingent upon securing authorization from the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF), a hurdle that previously presented a significant challenge. As the field is owned by the RFEF, any major renovations require their approval, as stipulated in their statutes. The Granadilla de Abona City Council successfully navigated this process, securing the necessary authorization and paving the way for the project to move forward.

Alejandro Morales, President of the Interinsular Football Federation, expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, stating, “It is a very important agreement and signature for both the Federation and CD Charco del Pino and the City Council. The facilities were already very deteriorated and this action will significantly improve the conditions for playing football.” This endorsement highlights the positive impact the renovation is expected to have on the local football community.
