Two of Hillsdale College’s most accomplished women’s swimmers are set to make history at the grandest stage of collegiate athletics. The NCAA announced on Wednesday that seniors and will compete in the 2025 NCAA DII Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, which will be held March 11-15 at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IU-Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Indiana.

For both Clifford and Mason, this event marks a significant milestone in their careers. Clifford, a seasoned competitor, will make her third appearance at the championships, while Mason, who is equally accomplished, will be making her fourth appearance. Their journey to this point has been marked by consistent excellence and numerous accolades.

Clifford, known for her prowess in the 200-yard butterfly, has previously earned first-team All-American honors with a seventh-place finish as a sophomore in 2023 and an honorable mention All-American with a 13th-place finish in 2024. Clifford has a chance to break a record as no Hillsdale swimmer has ever earned an All-American honor in three consecutive seasons, Hillsdale athletics reported. She enters the meet seeded 21st in the nation. In addition to the 200-yard butterfly, Clifford will also compete in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard freestyle, thanks to her previous B-cut times in both events.

“It’s an incredible opportunity for Megan to prove herself on a national stage once again,” stated Coach Rick Lane, who has been mentoring both athletes. “She has shown impeccable dedication and hard work throughout her career, and we expect her to make the most of this chance to excel.”

Elsewhere, Mason is set to shine in the 1,650-yard freestyle, an event in which she’s made her mark as an honorable mention All-American with an 11th-place finish as a sophomore in 2023. Despite narrowly missing out on repeating her honor in 2024 with a 17th-place finish, Mason remains a formidable competitor having 2025 behind her.

Mason said, “Everything has led up to this moment. The training, the sacrifices, and the support from my team and coach have all contributed to where I am today.” She is currently seeded 22nd in the 1,650-yard freestyle heading into the 2025 DII Championships.

Additionally, Mason will venture into both the 500-yard and 1,000-yard freestyle events, owed to her previous B-cut times in both disciplines. “Elise has a versatile skill set,” noted Lane. ‘She’s as determined as she is talented, and we can’t wait to see what she can achieve’.

Clifford and Mason’s journey at the 2025 Championships will also emphasize the shifting dynamics in collegiate swimming. With a stronger focus on mental health and balanced training, athletes are approaching competitions with a newfound sense of preparedness and resilience. “The recent emphasis on holistic well-being in athletics has benefited all competitors,” reported Lane. It’s a testament to a broader cultural shift in elite sports.

The championships, which will be streamed live on NC}})CA.com, beginning with competition on March 11, are expected to draw a significant audience. The event not only serves as a platform for elite performances but also highlights the integration of sports with academic rigor and athleticism—core aspects of student-athlete programs at institutions like Hillsdale College.

National Recognition and Career Prospects

Hillsdale’s competing swimmers benefit as NCAA participants by way of the deeply embedded philosophy that holistic well-being and competitive excellence produce high-quality intercollegiate athletes. Such high-profile experiences often translate into career opportunities post-graduation. For example: Former Hillsdale College swimmer Jamie Thompson went on to secure exciting internships after her graduation, mentoring young athletes.

The Evolution of Collegiate Athletics

Clifford and Mason’s participation in the 2025 Championships coincides with broader developments in collegiate athletics, like cooperatively designed training regimens and innovative nutritional guidelines. These advancements emphasize individual growth and excellence above mere athletic prowess, showcasing what institutions have to offer aspiring competitive athletes.

“Advanced training methodologies are transforming the landscape of collegiate swimming,” said Coach Rick Lane. “ Athletes are not only achieving top-level performances but also experiencing a deeper sense of fulfillment and personal growth.”

Challenges and Future Prospects

Nonetheless, collegiate athletics continues to undergo significant changes. Ensuring equity and accessibility within sports remains a constant challenge. Universities grapple with fostering an inclusive environment while maintaining competitive standards.

“As we look to the future, we’re committed to pushing boundaries,” noted Coach Rick Lane. “Equity and excellence go hand in hand, and initiatives like those at Hillsdale College are paving the way for a more inclusive and fulfilling athletic culture.”
