Charli XCX on Kamala Harris and the Power of Art
Charli XCX recently made headlines when she referred to US Vice President Kamala Harris as a “brat” on social media. In a recent interview, the British pop star clarified that her intention was to send a “positive and light-hearted message” rather than endorse any particular candidate.
Charli XCX, whose new album “Brat” has been well-received, explained that she wanted to show her support for democracy and women’s rights. She stated, “It’s really important to me to be on the right side of democracy and the right side of women’s rights.” Her post on X (formerly Twitter) read, “kamala IS brat,” which sparked a wave of memes and even caught the attention of the Harris campaign.
Although Charli XCX is not eligible to vote in the US presidential election, she didn’t expect her post to become such a big deal. She emphasized that her music is not political, saying, “I’m not Bob Dylan, and I don’t try to pretend to be. My music is not political. All of my life experiences feed into my art. What I say, what I wear, what I think, what I enjoy – everything goes into my art. But politics have nothing to do with my art.”
Despite the unexpected attention, Charli XCX is happy to have played a positive role in the election campaign. She stated, “I’m happy I was able to help prevent the downfall of democracy.”
