Netflix Animation Studios is expanding its Roald Dahl library with Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, an animated feature film set for a global theatrical release on Nov. 5, 2027, followed by a streaming debut on Netflix on Dec. 22, 2027, according to official studio announcements. The project brings a darker, modern twist to the beloved Dahl universe, placing Willy Wonka behind bars and introducing a brand-new generation of characters.

According to Netflix, the story picks up years after the infamous Golden Ticket contest. Willy Wonka has spent his time behind bars after being convicted for turning a child into a blueberry. Once released, the eccentric confectioner returns to his factory with the goal of bringing sweetness back to a bitter world. However, a teenage newcomer named Charlie Paley and his friends stand in his way. Facing eviction, these local kids plan a heist to break into the factory, steal a priceless Wonka Bar, and save their homes.

Star-Studded Voice Cast and Creative Team

The film features an all-star voice cast led by Children’s and Family Emmy winner Kit Connor as Charlie Paley and Academy Award winner Taika Waititi as Willy Wonka, as reported by Netflix. Connor described the project as a fresh and unique take on the classic tale.

I’m so excited to enter the wonderful world of Wonka. The directors’ vision and the early concept art instantly grabbed my attention, perfectly retaining the heartwarming essence of the original narrative while infusing it with a remarkably fresh and distinct identity.

Additional voice talent announced by the studio includes Nicola Coughlan, Charithra Chandran, Samson Kayo, Christopher Chung, Kate Winslet, and Helena Bonham Carter.

Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan are directing the feature. Aron Warner and Timothy Yoo are producing, while Taika Waititi serves as an executive producer.

Growing up immersed in Willy Wonka’s delightfully eccentric universe, it is an absolute honor to portray his ongoing escapades featuring grown-up characters. Furthermore, it’s wonderful to accomplish this in an unprecedented way through animation, crafting The Chocolate Factory that feels even more playfully chaotic than anyone could imagine.

Context Within Netflix’s Roald Dahl Catalog

According to reporting by What’s on Netflix, this animated feature is the latest major milestone in Netflix’s relationship with the Roald Dahl Story Company. Netflix initially partnered with the estate in 2018 to acquire rights to adapt over 15 tales, followed by an outright purchase of the entire company in 2021.

The strategy has previously yielded projects such as the live-action feature Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical in 2022, Wes Anderson’s Oscar-winning short film The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, and the animated adaptation of The Twits. While Netflix previously discussed episodic event series based on the Wonka property in 2020, those plans evolved into the upcoming 2027 feature film. Alongside the movie, Netflix plans to release a reality competition series titled The Golden Ticket later in 2027.
