CHARLOTTE,N.C. — The Charlotte 49ers are expected to hire Ohio University’s Tim Albin as their next head football coach, sources told ESPN on Saturday.
The sides are finalizing a five-year deal that is expected to be completed in the near future, sources said.
Albin’s hiring comes on the heels of a historic season for Ohio.He lead the Bobcats to their first Mid-American Conference (MAC) title since 1968, crushing Miami University 38-3 in Detroit on Saturday.Albin emerged as a top target for Charlotte prior to the championship game.

This season marked albin’s third straight 10-win season at Ohio, where he boasts a 33-19 record in four years and an notable 30-10 mark over the past three. He has also led Ohio to victory in both bowl games they’ve reached, defeating Wyoming in the Arizona Bowl and Georgia Southern in the Myrtle Beach Bowl.
Albin replaces Biff Poggi, who compiled a 6-16 record over two seasons at Charlotte. The 49ers won their final two games under interim coach Tim Brewster. As joining the American Athletic Conference two years ago, Charlotte has struggled in league play, posting a 6-16 record.Albin is a two-time MAC Coach of the Year, including this season. He earned the head coaching position at Ohio after the retirement of Frank Solich in July 2021. Albin initially signed a four-year deal and received a two-year extension in March 2023, extending his contract through 2026.
After a 3-9 inaugural season following solich’s departure, Albin guided Ohio to the 2022 MAC title game. This year, Ohio pulled off a stunning upset over Iowa State in Athens. Albin’s 2023 campaign was arguably his best, as Ohio lost all six of its all-league players from the previous year. Star quarterback Kurtis Rourke transferred to Indiana and has been instrumental in the Hoosiers’ unexpected run towards College Football Playoff contention.
Behind UCF transfer quarterback Parker Navarro, Ohio closed the season with a six-game winning streak, including a revenge victory over Miami, whom they had lost to earlier in the season.
Albin’s coaching experience extends beyond the NCAA Division I level. He previously served as a head coach at his alma mater, Northwestern Oklahoma State, an NAIA school. In 1999, he led the Rangers to an undefeated season and an NAIA national championship.
