City Stands Firm on Permit for Confederation Landing Performance Amid Public Concerns
Charlottetown, PEI – The City of Charlottetown is navigating public concerns regarding a performer scheduled to appear at Confederation Landing, a popular public space on the waterfront. In a statement released by the city, officials clarified their position on the event, emphasizing the legal limitations on restricting access to public spaces.
City’s Stance on Public Space Permits
The city acknowledged that concerns have been raised by members of the public about the performer. However,they stressed that the event is not city-sponsored. “This is not a City-sponsored event and while a permit was issued to the organizers, from a legal standpoint we are limited in restricting access to public spaces,” the statement read.
Confederation Landing, a picturesque park featuring a covered bandstand, is a well-loved spot for community gatherings and events. The city’s statement highlighted their commitment to inclusivity.
Support for the 2SLGBTQ+ Community
The city explicitly stated its full support for the 2SLGBTQ+ community. “The release adds that the city wants to be clear in its full support of the 2SLGBTQ+ community,” the statement continued. “If there are any opinions or statements expressed by any performer to the contrary, they are not the views of the City.”
This clarification comes as the performer, who is also scheduled to appear in Halifax, has faced similar scrutiny.The performer is slated to perform at the York Redoubt National Historic Site in Halifax on Wednesday, an event that has also drawn criticism from local residents urging Parks Canada to cancel the performance.
