Updated June 18, 2025
Vancouver island’s Chase Varnes, 13, experienced a rocky start on “America’s Got Talent” Tuesday night. However, a cover of an Ed Sheeran song transformed his audition into a standout performance.
Varnes began with an original song while playing acoustic guitar. Simon Cowell quickly stopped him. “I hate to do this,” Cowell said, explaining he didn’t like the song but liked Varnes and asked if he had another song prepared.
Without hesitation, Varnes launched into “Life Goes On,” originally featuring Luke Combs. The Ed Sheeran cover instantly won over the audience and most of the judges.
Howie Mandel compared Varnes to a young justin Bieber, referencing his Canadian background and early busking days. Sofia Vergara also praised the performance, noting the enhancement in the second song and predicting the girls would “go crazy” for him.
Mel B offered a more reserved critique. “You were great,” she said, calling him a “diamond in the rough” with potential but noted his nervousness, adding he wasn’t “quite there yet” for her.
While Mel B voted “no,” Mandel and Vergara both said “yes,” leaving the deciding vote to Cowell. He acknowledged Varnes had “everything going for you” and that the audience loved him, resulting in three yes votes.
Varnes’ cover of “Life Goes On” became a trending topic online, alongside novelty acts such as a cat-themed rapper and a group dressed as cats.
What’s next
Varnes will advance in the competition, hoping to capitalize on the momentum from his viral performance and further refine his talent.
