OpenAI Leaders Recall Last-Minute ChatGPT Name Change
Updated July 3, 2025
Before ChatGPT became a household name, OpenAI considered a less catchy title. Research chief Mark Chen and head of ChatGPT Nick turley said on the OpenAI podcast that the AI tool was almost called “Chat with GPT-3.5.”
Turley said the team decided to simplify the name the day before the late 2022 launch. The leaders of the ChatGPT project said they realized “chat with GPT-3.5” was challenging to pronounce.
The team opted for ChatGPT, short for “generative pre-trained transformer.”
Chen noted the tool’s popularity has been notable.
ChatGPT’s success also had a personal impact on Chen.
“My parents just stopped asking me to go work for Google,” he said.
