ChatGPT Stops Search Engine Indexing of Shared Chats

OpenAI has swiftly removed a feature from ChatGPT that permitted shared conversations to be discoverable by search engines. This functionality specifically impacted chats that users had chosen to share.
Privacy Concerns Prompt OpenAI Action
A report by TechCrunch highlighted that certain ChatGPT conversations were appearing in search results on platforms like Google and Bing. This indexing occurred when users employed specific search filters, such as targeting URLs from “chatgpt.com/share.” The report cited instances where personal details, including a LinkedIn profile, was easily identifiable through these shared chats, raising notable privacy concerns. While the exact extent of any sensitive data exposure remains unclear, the potential for unintended information leakage was significant.
OpenAI’s Response and Feature Clarification
OpenAI’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Dane Stuckey, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the feature was an experimental option designed to help users discover potentially useful conversations. He clarified that it was an opt-in feature, requiring users to explicitly click “Share” and then select a checkbox to allow their chat to be indexed by search engines.
Stuckey confirmed the removal of this feature, stating that OpenAI decided to disable it due to the risk of accidental sharing. The company is also actively working to remove any previously indexed content from search engine results.
It’s crucial to note that user names, custom instructions, and messages added after sharing were intended to remain private. The feature also included an option for users to control the discoverability of their shared links.
Search Engine Stance on Indexing
in response to the situation, Google released a statement emphasizing that search engines do not control what content is made publicly available on the web. The duty for deciding whether a page is indexed by search engines lies with the publishers themselves.
This swift action by OpenAI underscores a commitment to user privacy and data security in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-powered conversational tools.
