Chatham Cinema to Host Arthouse Film Festival in 2026

February 25, 2026 Marcus Rodriguez - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Chatham, New Jersey, is set to become a haven for cinephiles this spring as the Arthouse Film Festival returns for its 2026 season. Beginning March 16th, the festival will unfold over ten weeks at the Chatham Hickory Cinema, offering a preview of some of the most anticipated independent and foreign films before their wider release.

Now in its 36th year, the Arthouse Film Festival has a long history of showcasing award-winning films from prestigious festivals like Sundance, Cannes, Toronto, Telluride, Venice, and SXSW. This year’s lineup promises a diverse selection of cinematic experiences, including prestige studio films screened in Chatham ahead of their New York premieres.

The festival boasts an impressive track record, having hosted 2,088 movie premieres and welcomed 1,323 guest appearances over the past three and a half decades. Notable figures who have participated in past festivals include Oscar winners and nominees such as Ethan Hawke, Viggo Mortensen, Alan Arkin, and Jesse Eisenberg, alongside other prominent actors and filmmakers like Dylan Baker and Famke Janssen.

Festival director Chuck Rose emphasized the festival’s commitment to flexibility, noting that “wonderful surprises and fantastic celebrities can pop up out of nowhere, so we try to keep the schedule as fluid as possible.” This approach allows the festival to capitalize on last-minute opportunities and provide attendees with unique experiences.

Tickets are currently available for purchase online at www.arthousefilmfestival.com. The festival is structured into two main sessions. Session One runs from March 16th to April 13th, with discounted rates available until March 9th. Session Two takes place from April 20th to May 18th, with discounted rates available until April 13th. A Flex Ticket option allows attendees to choose eight out of the ten screenings, while a Both Sessions pass provides access to all twenty films. Prices range from $146 to $278 depending on the package and purchase date.

As of February 25th, the confirmed film lineup includes several highly anticipated titles. Late Fame, directed by Kent Jones and starring Willem Dafoe and Greta Lee, is an adaptation of a novel by Arthur Schnitzler, the author of Eyes Wide Shut. The Stranger, directed by Francois Ozon and featuring Benjamin Voisin and Rebecca Marder, is based on Albert Camus’ landmark novel. Rob Petit’s Underland, produced by Darren Aronofsky, offers a cinematic journey into the Earth’s hidden depths. Petra Volpe’s Late Shift, starring Leonie Benesch, is a gripping drama set in an understaffed urban hospital. Mad Bills To Pay, directed by Joel Alfonso Vargas, explores the challenges of life in contemporary New York City. Amrun, directed by Fatih Akin, is a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of World War II. Maddie’s Secret, starring John Early, Kristen Johnston, and Kate Berlant, is a satirical drama. Finally, Time and Water, directed by Sara Dosa, examines the impact of climate change on Iceland’s glaciers.

The festival’s selection process prioritizes films that offer unique perspectives and artistic merit. Last year’s festival saw a pre-release screening of Train Dreams, which went on to win Best Feature, Best Director, and Best Cinematography at the Independent Spirit Awards and is currently nominated for four Oscars.

Chuck Rose also hosts Cinema Q&A With Chuck Rose, a TV series featuring in-depth discussions with filmmakers and actors. The series airs on NYC Life and is available in 18 million cable homes, as well as online through the NYC Media website and app.

The Arthouse Film Festival continues to be a vital platform for independent and foreign cinema, providing audiences with the opportunity to discover new voices and engage with thought-provoking films before they reach a wider audience. The festival’s commitment to quality and its welcoming atmosphere make it a must-attend event for film enthusiasts in the New Jersey area and beyond.
