Cheese Reduces Snoring: Study Links Dairy to Lower Sleep Apnoea Risk
Cheese may help reduce snoring. A study with 400,000 participants showed that eating cheese regularly can lower the risk of sleep apnoea by 28%. Researchers highlighted the importance of diet in this condition, suggesting that cheese intake might be a key factor.
Sleep apnoea is a common disorder that affects nearly one billion people worldwide. The most common type, obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), occurs when the throat’s walls relax and narrow during sleep. This can lead to pauses in breathing and loud snoring. In the UK, around 3.9 million people may have moderate to severe OSA, but many cases go undiagnosed.
Traditionally, snorers were advised to avoid dairy, including cheese, as it was thought to increase mucus and worsen symptoms. However, recent findings suggest that different types of cheese, such as cheddar and gorgonzola, may actually lower the risk of sleep apnoea. Researchers from Chengdu University, China, identified over 20 reasons why cheese could be beneficial, including its effects on testosterone levels and blood pressure. High blood pressure is known to increase the risk of sleep apnoea.
In summary, incorporating cheese into your diet might not just be tasty but could also contribute to better sleep by reducing snoring and sleep apnoea risk.
