Mikel Slams Chelsea player’s “Stupid” Error
Updated June 21, 2025
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel didn’t mince words when discussing a Chelsea player’s costly error during a recent game. Appearing on dazn, Mikel described the mistake as “remarkable, stupid, stupid stupid,” questioning the player’s decision-making in a critical moment.
Mikel referenced a similar error in a previous game against Newcastle, emphasizing the importance of that match for Champions League qualification. He stressed that such mistakes are unacceptable, especially at a club like Chelsea Football Club.
the criticism comes amid speculation about competition within the squad, particularly with the arrival of Delap. Mikel suggested that the player in question might be struggling to embrace healthy competition, preferring to be the sole focus. He argued that if the player isn’t ready for competition, they shouldn’t be at Chelsea.
However, teammate Cucurella offered a different outlook, defending the player. Cucurella said the player was “very sad” about the incident, explaining that he was trying to win the ball but had the “bad luck” of kicking the othre player’s leg. He acknowledged the player is young and needs to improve but emphasized his importance to the team.
Cucurella added that the player apologized after speaking with the manager, insisting the incident was unintentional. the incident highlights the complexities of team dynamics and the pressure players face in high-stakes situations. The Chelsea player’s role within the team is now under scrutiny.
“[It’s an] unbelievable, stupid, stupid stupid mistake, I don’t know what is going through his head,” Mikel said.
“He’s very sad… he didn’t do it on purpose,” Cucurella said, defending his teammate.
What’s next
Chelsea manager Maresca now faces the challenge of addressing the situation within the team and deciding weather to continue trusting the player or give Delap more opportunities.
