Chelsea Unleash Goal Frenzy on Barrow, While Villa Stage Daring Escape from Wycombe
Chelsea and Aston Villa Advance in League Cup
Chelsea’s first team secured a spot in the League Cup round of 16 with a convincing 5-0 victory over hosts Barrow. French striker Christopher Nkunku stole the show, scoring three goals to lead his team to a decisive win.
Nkunku opened the scoring with two consecutive goals in the 8th and 15th minutes. The hosts’ woes continued when goalkeeper Paul Foreman accidentally scored an own goal in the 28th minute. In the second half, Portuguese midfielder Pedro Neto added the fourth goal in the 48th minute, and Nkunku completed his hat-trick in the 75th minute.
Chelsea will face a tough test in the next round as they take on their London neighbors Tottenham, who qualified for the round of 16 after beating Coventry City 2-1.
In another League Cup match, Aston Villa qualified for the round of 16 with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over hosts Wycombe Wanderers. Villa’s Emiliano Buendia and John McGinn scored twice from penalty kicks in the 55th and 85th minutes to secure the win for their team. Wycombe Wanderers’ Richard Cooney scored the only goal for the hosts in the 95th minute.
Aston Villa will await the winner of Arsenal’s match against Bolton Wanderers, scheduled for Wednesday evening, to determine their next opponent in the round of 16.
