Chelsea’s Conference League Squad

Chelsea President Enzo Maresca has explained the need for ‘protection’ behind his decision to leave out Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia, and Wesley Fofana from the Conference League squad.

The Blues will be participating in the latest European competition next week, but with a packed schedule ahead, the club has decided to leave out last season’s star players and two players who have just returned from a long break.

Maresca’s Reasoning

‘The reason Cole, Wes, and Romeo are out of the Conference League squad is just to give them a bit of protection,’ Maresca revealed ahead of the London derby against West Ham.

‘West and Romeo’s case is a little bit different because they came back from long-term injuries last year. Cole’s case is a mix in that it’s been a very tough season and an intense season so we’re trying to protect him.’

Potential Strike Action

Several high-profile figures have hinted at the possibility of going on strike amid increasingly hectic schedules this week, and Maresca would back some form of industrial action.

‘For me, I think the amount of games we had was completely wrong,’ he said. ‘But the only people who can do something are the players, and we can help them.’

‘Over the last two weeks, a few players have tried to explain their thinking and I think that’s a good starting point. Some of them have said (going on strike) might be a good idea for them.’

Guardiola’s Support

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola echoed this sentiment, saying the onus was on the players to bring about change.

‘I agree with you. Perhaps for the first time, many voices are speaking about the players. I am convinced that if anything is to change, it has to come from the players. They are the only ones who can change things.

‘The business can be done without managers, sporting directors, media, owners, but it can’t be done without players. They are the only ones who can do it.’
