Chelsea ⁤Nips LAFC in Club World ‍Cup Opener

ATLANTA—Chelsea’s ‍attacking prowess proved too much for LAFC in their FIFA Club World Cup match Monday, resulting in a 2-0 victory. The win puts ‍several Chelsea players under⁣ scrutiny this summer.

Manager ⁢Enzo‍ Maresca, before⁢ the match, confirmed the club’s search for a winger⁤ after opting against a permanent deal for Jadon Sancho from Manchester United. The suspension⁣ of Mykhailo ‍Mudryk‍ further ⁣intricate matters, leading to an unsuccessful attempt to sign Jamie Gittens from‍ Borussia Dortmund.Pedro Neto seized ⁤the chance, outshining Noni madueke.

Neto ‍opened the scoring in the 34th minute, ⁢capitalizing on a pass from Nicolas Jackson to⁣ beat LAFC defender Ryan hollingshead ⁢and fire past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

chelsea struggled to extend their lead ⁤until Liam ‍delap, a £30 million signing from Ipswich ⁢Town, entered ‍the game in the 64th minute. Delap quickly made ⁢an impact, assisting Enzo Fernández’s close-range goal after a clever run and pass from Cole Palmer.

While the victory wasn’t entirely convincing, Maresca emphasized that tournaments are⁢ not won in the first game. The team is focused on balancing their Club World‍ Cup campaign with preparations ⁢for the 2025-26⁢ season. Neto also hit the crossbar in the match. Madueke, however, missed key⁤ opportunities, while Jackson, despite the pressure, did not score. Chelsea may still‍ pursue Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, giving Jackson⁣ and Delap a chance to prove their worth.

“It ⁤is indeed always good to have competition, this is football,” ⁣Delap said. “It is an incredible club ⁢and it is always going to be incredibly ⁣hard, but ⁣you have⁤ to thrive off the competition. Of course it ‍is good to help the team, but I want to score ⁤some as well.”

Despite the loss,⁤ LAFC showed resilience. Denis⁣ Bouanga had a chance to equalize, but Robert Sánchez made a crucial save. Olivier Giroud,‍ a⁢ former Chelsea player, came on as a substitute but had limited impact.

The atmosphere ⁤at⁢ Mercedes-Benz‍ Stadium was subdued, with only 22,137 fans in attendance. LAFC coach⁢ Steve Cherundolo noted the location was “probably not somewhere we woudl visit⁤ too often.”

Palmer’s connection with Jackson and Delap shows promise. Maresca, who previously worked with Delap at Manchester City, praised Delap’s understanding of the ⁤team’s playing style and Jackson’s response to⁣ the ⁢competition. ⁢”I prefer to have four or‍ five strikers who score 10 or 12 goals each‍ rather than one striker who scored 40 goals,” Maresca said.

Chelsea now travels to Philadelphia to face Flamengo. The Club World Cup match will be a sterner‍ test ⁣and another chance⁣ for Chelsea’s forwards to silence critics.
